This pottery class Marrakech thing is seriously fun and way cooler than it sounds! You spend 2 hours at Workshop Lamsaty where this amazing local craftswoman shows you how to actually make pottery, not just watch. I’ve been sending people here through MoroccoPlan for ages, and they always come back with huge smiles (and clay under their fingernails!).
Here’s what makes this pottery class Marrakech medina experience so awesome: you get to try BOTH hand-shaping and the pottery wheel! I mean, how many people can say they’ve thrown pottery on a wheel in Morocco? The instructor is super patient – like, she won’t judge you when your first pot looks like a blob (mine definitely did!). And right when you’re getting tired and your hands are all crampy – Moroccan tea break! It’s perfectly timed.
The coolest part? You take home whatever you make! Whether it’s a wonky cup or a surprisingly decent bowl, it’s YOURS. Imagine drinking coffee from a mug you made in Marrakech – that’s a story right there!
Real talk about your pottery class Marrakech experience: WEAR OLD CLOTHES. I cannot stress this enough. You’re gonna have clay on your hands, arms, probably your face somehow. The traditional pottery making Marrakech way is messy and that’s what makes it fun!
Book the afternoon session if you can – the light’s really nice then for photos, and you’re not rushing to get somewhere after. The pottery workshop Marrakech spot is outside the Medina, so factor in like 30-40 dirhams each way for a taxi.
Here’s what nobody tells you: take pics of your creation before you leave! Once it dries and you paint it, it looks totally different. And if you want it fired in the kiln, plan that week-long stay. Wet clay in a kiln.
Ready to experience the thrill of pottery class Marrakech? Reserve your spot today and discover how fun it is to make stuff with your own hands alongside awesome local artisans! Coming home with wonky pottery you made beats any perfect souvenir from the shops. These workshops are small, so they fill up – grab your spot!
So you rock up to Workshop (it's right across from that AHMA Construction building – can't miss it). Your instructor – mine was this sweet lady named Khadija – starts with a 15-minute demo that'll make you go "whoa, that looks easy!" Spoiler alert: it's not! She shows you both techniques – the hand-forming stuff and the wheel throwing session – and makes it look like magic.
This is where it gets real! During this hands-on pottery and tea Marrakech workshop, you pick what you wanna make – a cup, a little box, maybe attempt a mini tagine, or just mess around on the potter's wheel experience until something decent happens. Khadija walks you through the wheel and hand-forming techniques, and honestly, she's got the patience of a saint. Your first attempts will probably look hilarious (mine looked like a melted ice cream cone), but that's totally fine! All the tools and materials provided are legit professional stuff, so at least you're failing with quality equipment!
About halfway through, when your hands are killing you and you've got clay literally everywhere, it's Moroccan tea break time! This mint tea is so sweet it'll make your teeth hurt, but somehow it's exactly what you need. The tea and snack interlude is when everyone starts laughing about their creations and sharing tips. It's actually really fun!
Last bit is getting your creation ready to take home. Khadija wraps it up all careful-like so it won't break on the way back to your riad. Here's a hot tip: let it dry for a day, then paint it however you want! If you're staying in Marrakech for a week or more, they can actually fire it in the kiln for you – makes it proper pottery instead of just dried clay!
most people haven't! That's the whole point. Khadija starts from zero and helps you the whole way. By the end, you'll have made something that at least resembles pottery!
It's at Atelier, across from AHMA Construction. About 10 minutes from downtown by taxi, 15 from the Medina. Super easy – they give you Google Maps coordinates when you book.
Not the tiny ones (under 3 feet tall), but older kids who can follow instructions? They'll love it! Just dress them in clothes you don't care about – clay gets EVERYWHERE.
So if you're staying a week, they can fire your piece in the kiln to make it permanent. BUT – and this is important – it needs 6 days to dry first or it'll literally explode in the kiln.
Cash or card for any extras, and seriously, wear your crappiest clothes. Clay usually washes out but why risk your nice stuff?
